Skin Science:
The adipose tissue consists of round cells bursting with lipids, referred
to as adipocytes. Located on the surface as well as in deeper layers, these
cells are natural fat storage areas to meet the body’s needs. When the
formation of fat is faster than its destruction, the adipocytes swell. They
compress the dermis, then the epidermis, which gives the skin its bumpy
appearance, hence the expressions “orange peel” or “pits”. This is known as
adipose cellulite. They also interfere with the effective drainage of blood
and lymph vessels, thereby creating aqueous cellulite. The metabolism of
adipocytes is based on 3 mechanisms: adipogenesis (process whereby
pre-adipocytes transform into mature and functional adipocytes, capable of
storing fat), lipogenesis (fat storage process) and lipolysis (fat breakdown
process).
